De bombast van Arcade Fire is niet voor iedereen weggelegd, ook niet voor
ondergetekende, maar de Canadese band heeft wel oog voor uitzonderlijke
musici als Colin Stetson. Deze Amerikaanse saxofonist begeleidde meer grote
publiekstrekkers, onder wie Tom Waits en David Byrne. Met New History
Warfare Vol. 2: Judges bewijst hij als solosaxofonist met gemak drie
kwartier lang te kunnen boeien. Door middel van onorthodoxe technieken weet
hij zijn bassaxofoon te laten klinken als een compleet blaasorkest,
inclusief percussie.
Voor wie verstand heeft van improvisatiejazz klinken de technieken van Stetson bekend in de oren: het ploppen met de tong, het ritmisch tikken met de kleppen, circulaire ademhaling, waarbij men door de neus inademt en tegelijk met de mond lucht door het instrument perst, en het grommen door het riet, waardoor meerdere noten tegelijk klinken: ze zijn uitgevonden, uitgebuit en uitgebreid door een hele stamboom aan blazers, onder wie Evan Parker, John Butcher en Peter Brötzmann; Stetson speelde zelf met bassaxofoon-expert Anthony Braxton.
New History Warfare klinkt echter anders dan soloalbums van bovengenoemde musici. Stetson is er niet op uit om de grenzen van improvisatie te verleggen. Zijn composities zijn strak ritmisch, liggen goed in het gehoor en zijn daardoor beter te vergelijken met de instrumentale solomuziek van folkgitaristen als John Fahey. Stetson gebruikt zijn virtuositeit om melodie, ritme en noise samen te voegen tot onweerstaanbare grooves. De plaat is bovendien perfect opgenomen en bevat voldoende afwisseling, onder meer door bijdragen van gastvocalisten Laurie Anderson en Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond).
