Na voorgaande Aziatische en Russische raadspelletjes dit keer iets totaal
anders. Een leeg theater als decor voor een droge registratie van het
toneelstuk van Marivaux. Liefde, bedrog, dubbelspel en geld zijn de
ingredienten voor een spervuur van woordgevechten waarin aan de bedoelingen
van de personages dit keer niets te raden wordt overgelaten. Totdat er weer
een dubbele bodem uit valt. De zichtbare zelfgenoegzaamheid van de acteurs
bij het afvuren van deze mitrailleurgevechten wordt op film uiteindelijk
wel irritant. De schuld daarvan ligt niet bij Marivaux, maar bij Jacquot.
