Recent verscheen de autobiografie van de voormalige Engelse premier Tony Blair. Ik betwijfel of zijn verhaal zo spannend is als dat van zijn fictieve tegenhanger Adam Lang in de film The Ghost Writer. Maar goed, daarin staat dan ook een verborgen boodschap waar de CIA erg onrustig van wordt.

Een ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) krijgt de opdracht om het manuscript van voormalig premier Lang (Pierce Brosnan) te herschrijven tot een leesbaar boek. Zoals hij zelf bijdehand opmerkt nadat hij het dikke manuscript, dat overigens streng bewaakt wordt, voor het eerste heeft gelezen: 'All the words are there, they are just in the wrong order.' In dat opzicht is het boek exemplarisch voor het leven van Lang dat ook behoorlijk overhoop ligt. Lang wordt ervan beschuldigd terreurverdachten illegaal te hebben uitgeleverd aan de CIA. Er dreigt een rechtzaak voor deze oorlogsmisdaad. Daarnaast is de eerste Ghostwriter die aan het project verbonden was, op mysterieuze wijze om het leven gekomen. Genoeg reden dus voor de nieuwe ghostwriter om aan de woorden van Lang te twijfelen en op onderzoek te gaan.

Blair & co.
Het script van The Ghost Writer werd gepend door Robert Harris en Roman Polanski. Ze baseerden zich op het boek The Ghost van Harris, de schrijver en journalist die zich liet inspireren door Tony Blair en zijn bondgenootschap met Bush Jr. Al zal de grote onthulling in het boek, niet iedereen als logisch of waarheidsgetrouw overkomen.

Regisseur Polanski houdt de spanning goed vast in deze vrijwel geweldloze thriller. De locatie aan de kust, het duinlandschap en de woest kolkende zee, en het prachtige moderne huis waarin Lang en zijn staf verblijven, verhogen de claustrofobische sfeer en onderstrepen de geïsoleerde positie van de oud-premier. Enkele goed getimede sarcastische oneliners bieden lucht in de adembenemende zoektocht naar de waarheid. Een van de vorige schrijfklussen van de ghostwriter was de autobiografie van een goochelaar getiteld: I came, I sawed and conquered. Van dat niveau dus. Niet alleen the Ghost maakt bijdehante opmerkingen, eigenlijk weet ieder personage zijn mondje goed te roeren.

De photoshopper in het art department verdient wel een tik op de vingers: de foto's waarin personages bij elkaar geplakt zijn om een gezamenlijk verleden te suggereren zien er erg nep uit. Saillant detail: we horen nooit wat de echte naam van The Ghost is. De schrijver blijft in dat opzicht anoniem, zoals het hoort bij ghostwriters.
